To the south of the I ndian metropol is of S urat in Gujarat province lies a vast in dustrial zone that has been gro wing eve r since the 19 60s. Director Rahul Jain filmed the gru eling daily routin e in jus t one of th e many texti le factorie s there. In t he factory, man and machine seem to have fuse d into on e being. It is dark an d dank, and barely any dayli ght pen etrates the s pace. The labor is heavy and mind-n umbing, and the work days seem endles s. We are drawn into a gloomy world where the cacophon ous beat of machiner y sets t he rhythm o f toil. Ja in is as in terested in th e mysterious co nnection be tween worker and prod uct (the fabrics a re treated mechanically, but al so with l ove) as he is in the deg rading co nditions. E ach shift las ts 12 hour s, for adults and chi ldren alik e, and wages are extremely l ow. Short inte rviews are inte rspersed throug hout the observation al sequen ces, some of w hich are cap tivating in their beauty while others are pa inful to watch – such as when we see a b oy nodding violently in h is struggle to stay awa ke.
