It is dar k and dank , and barely any dayl ight penetr ates the s pace. The lab or is heavy a nd mind-numb ing, an d the work day s seem endles s. We are draw n into a gloomy w orld where th e cacoph onous beat of m achinery sets th e rhythm of toil. Each shift lasts 12 hours, for ad ults and children al ike, and wages are extremely l ow.
