To the so uth of the Indian metro polis of Su rat in Gujar at province lie s a vast indu strial zone that has been growing ever si nce the 1960s. Dir ector R ahul Jai n filmed the gruel ing daily rou tine in ju st one of the many textile fa ctories ther e. In the fac tory, man and machine s eem to hav e fused into o ne being. It is dark and dan k, and barel y any daylight penetrates the space. The labor i s heavy an d mind-numbi ng, and the w ork days seem endless . We are drawn into a gloomy w orld where the cacopho nous beat of machine ry sets the rhyt hm of toil. Jai n is as int erested in the mysterious c onnection between work er and produ ct (the fabrics are treated mechan ically, but also with l ove) as he is in the degr ading c ondition s. Each shif t lasts 12 hours, fo r adults and children a like, a nd wages are ex tremely low.
