Director Rahu l Jain filme d the grue ling daily routine in jus t one of th e many texti le factories t here. In the fa ctory, man and machine seem t o have fused in to one being. It is dark a nd dank, and bar ely any d aylight pene trates the space. Th e labor is heavy and m ind-numbing, and the w ork days seem endless. W e are drawn in to a gloo my world where the cacop honous beat of machin ery sets the rhyth m of toi l. Jain is as interes ted in the my steriou s conne ction betw een worker an d produ ct (the fabrics are treated mechanical ly, but also with love) as he is in the degrading c onditions. Each shift lasts 12 hours, for adults and children a like, and wage s are extremely low. S hort inter views are interspersed throug hout the ob servational se quences, s ome of whi ch are captivat ing in their beaut y while others are painf ul to watc h – suc h as whe n we see a boy nodding v iolently in hi s struggle to s tay awake.
