To the south of the Indian metro polis o f Surat in Gujar at provinc e lies a vast industrial z one that has b een growing ev er since the 1960s. Director Rah ul Jain filmed the grueli ng daily routine in just o ne of the many textile facto ries th ere. In t he factor y, man and machine seem t o have fused into one be ing. It is dark and dank , and barely any daylight p enetrat es the spac e. The l abor is heavy and mind- numbing, a nd the wo rk days s eem endles s. We are drawn int o a gloomy w orld wh ere the caco phonous beat of machi nery sets the rhyt hm of toil. Jai n is as intere sted in t he myster ious connect ion between worker and prod uct (the fabr ics are tre ated mechan ically, but also wit h love) as he i s in the degrad ing condi tions.
